Our Wooden Door Refinishing Process
It’s not as simple as simply adding a new layer of stain to an existing wooden door. In some cases, we can refinish your door without even removing it from the frame and taking it with us. In other cases, we may need to take the door down and undergo a more rigorous refurbishment. This can take 1-2 days, depending on how many coats of stain it needs.
The first step is a thorough assessment of the door’s condition. Any damages, such as cracks, splits, or rot, will need to be addressed. This might involve filling in gaps, sanding down rough areas, or replacing damaged wood.
We then strip the door of all hardware and its current worn out finish. The old layers of paint or varnish are carefully stripped away, and we are left with a clean layer of original wood to work with. We then evenly and meticulously sand the door down to leave a perfectly smooth surface – we will carefully clean the door as well. We’ll use as many strips of sandpaper as we need to!
Depending on the type of wood and the desired look, a stain may be applied to enhance the natural grain of the wood. You are welcome to add input as to which stain we use – we can provide samples. After several layers of stain, we will apply high end sealer or varnish to protect the wood from moisture, UV rays, and wear.
We can also paint the door if you have a color in mind. We carefully select paint that will “play nice” with any existing grain or color on the wood, and we’ll make sure it is resistant to the element.
