Wood

For wood exteriors, start by thoroughly washing the surface with a high-powered pressure washer to break loose peeling pieces of paint. Then sand down all the spots that might make the surface look uneven. After the surface is even, check for cracks in the finish. Fill in all cracks or damaged wood with caulk and apply a high-quality primer. Then you can start painting. Two coats is suggested, but be sure to give the paint plenty of time to dry in between coats. Wood siding should be repainted or restrained somewhere in the timeframe of every 3-7 years.

Aluminum

Aluminum exteriors must be washed thoroughly before painting. To wash aluminum exteriors, use a simple solution of water and a mild detergent, then rinse and dry thoroughly. After washing the surface, sand down the aluminum wall to remove any oxidation. This removes particles that resists adhesion while creating a rough surface that is ideal for a fresh coat of paint. Apply a primer that is specially designed for slick, metallic surfaces to combat rust. Once the primer is all dry, apply the fresh coat of paint. Alumnus siding is traditionally repainted every 5 years.

Plastic Siding

Plastic siding is similar to aluminum siding in regards to prepping. Start by cleaning the surface thoroughly. Then, like the aluminum walls, lightly sand the plastic siding to create some extra adhesion. Apply the primer evenly, let it dry, then paint a new layer of paint. Plastic siding is durable and reliable, and it only needs to be repainted every 10-15 years.

Brick

Prepping a brick wall for new paint is a bit more involved than the other siding styles. First, clean the wall with a stiff brush. A stiff brush is best for this job because it is strong enough to remove the dirt and grime that gets wedged into the porous brick siding. After cleaning the wall, repair any mortar lost while cleaning. Be sure to let the mortar dry completely before applying a durable primer. Finally, paint the brick wall. Our contractors know the best paints for any exterior, and using a high-quality acrylic exterior paint is the best move. With good paint and skilled painters, a fresh brick siding paint job should last at least 15-20 years.
