What Is Limewash?

Limewash is one of the oldest paints known to humankind that is still used throughout the world today. In the paint’s early creations, additive ingredients varied depending on location. Some example additives include skimmed milk, gelatin, chalk, wheat starch, rye starch, and linseed oil. However, the inclusion of pulverized limestone always remained the base ingredient. In fact, it was the inclusion of limestone and its durable yet permeable property that made limewash so appealing. In ancient structures, this breathability was especially useful in reducing the effects of condensation, which helped reduce humidity in the home by allowing the moisture in the walls to evaporate. Limewash can act as a permeable substance based on the way it applies and soaks into porous surfaces, rather than sealing them like most other paints do.

The Appeal of Modern Limewashing

Stylistically, interior limewash painting transforms ordinary-looking surfaces by giving them depth, character, and texture. While normally used on brick and stone walls, it can also adhere to plaster and walls prepped with a special primer. Naturally occurring limestone is an opaque white mineral, so you can expect the results of your limewashing to be a creamy white to pale sand color. However, limewash paints can be found in a range of neutral color variations, such as warm grey, dusty rose, and earthy brown.
